How do you measure success?

People will tell you that success is achieving what you set out to do. They will tell you that success is winning, wealth and gaining recognition. All of the above are by-products of success, but they are not success. This conventional notion of success is concerned with the outcome of what you do. I've heard some say that success is the result of a combination of hard work and luck, or determination and talent or even just being in the right place at the right time.

While these may help determine some of your success, they are not the essence of success. What these folks don't tell you, because they don't know - is that  you cannot BECOME successful. You can only BE successful. OK, so now you're wondering, what the heck does he mean by that! Well, you most likely have heard about the Now or the present moment  (If you haven't, please let me know in the comments section and that will be the subject of another blog.) There is nothing else other than the present moment. Anything that happened in the past, will happen in the future or is happening right now, you reading these words for example, all happen in the present moment. So following that example success, therefore, is nothing more than a successful present moment. You cannot become successful, because success only happens Now, or in other words, in this present moment.

If you work really hard at something and are under terrific stress or strain and finally you enjoy some of the desired outcome, was that success? Or did you just spend this time polluting your body and the Earth with negative energy? The untrue assumption is that success is some future event and that the end justifies the means. But the end and means are one, and if the means did not contribute to human happiness, neither will the end.

To truly taste success in the moment, we must operate with a sense of quality in what we do, even the most simple action. Quality implies care and attention. Your entire life journey ultimately consists of the step you are taking at this moment. There is always only this one step, so you must give it your fullest attention. This step is primary, your destination secondary. When DOING becomes infused with the timeless quality of BEING, that is success.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step" - Lao Tzu

As always, take what resonates and leave the rest.

P.S. Remember, You're the one!
